Plant Dino Kale to Avoid Aphids
Dino Kale is my Kale of choice. It is a thick dark green leaved plant that grows really well most of the year. Last year I planted two different types of Kale in a row. One half had Red Russian, the other Dino. When the Kale was all leafed out and ready to be fully enjoyed for a meal, I went out to harvest some. Upon inspection, I noticed an aphid issue on the undersides of the Red Russian kale. No problem, since I can wash the majority of them off, and boil / steam the rest. However, I noticed the Dino Kale has ZERO aphids. That’s right, none.
I don’t spray anything on the garden, not even Neem oil. I have been observing which plants do well in what section of the garden as well as watching bug issues come and go. The fact that Dino Kale isn’t liked by the Aphids is beyond me, but no complaints! I have moved the Kale plot this year for a little crop rotation. We’ll see if the Aphids like this new spot or if in fact the Dino Kale is Aphid proof.
